Everybody who does business with RJ almost without exception would recommend them to a new customer. When agreeing the brief, we talked at length with the business owners to make sure we got the right look and feel for the site right from the beginning. It was clear we needed a menu that could deal with thousands of products yet remain clear for the end user, so this would need us to develop a custom drop down.
Some of the management team at RJ had seen open source shopping cart technology in the past and wanted us to use that – but after a few experiments it soon became clear that this wasn’t going to be flexible enough to give them the high-quality customised look they wanted.
We looked at using the Magento system, but after some brief analysis we realise that this was going to be way over budget for our client. That having been said we would recommend it for clients considering e-commerce with a more substantial budget to invest. The cost of installing Magento is high and the cost of maintaining it is medium to average and that has to be borne in mind in our view when considering implementing it.
We eventually found Prestashop to be an ideal system for running the e-commerce section of this site- we ran tests with client to check it had the inbuilt content management which the client could actuialy access and use easily. This would give us the best flexibility to create a site that was both practical and could allow him to deal with the thousands of products he sells and manage them without too much difficulty.
The administration panel is quite intuitive and easy to master and as new products come in, RJ Electrics can update their site and add new products when needed. The site also has a good shopping cart system that allows users to buy products with very few clicks (we customised it to do that). We also selected a simple payment processing system and applied for it on clients behalf. This could take payments online from debit and credit cards as well as from PayPal for those customers who did not have a card.
When designing the site, we customised it to stand out from other electrical retailers. The dropdown menu is dynamic (which means it auto updates when client adds a new product) and we also customised the home page sliders, categories page and much more. Most interesting from a coding viewpoint was to make a system that gives customers free deliveyr only in the local area when they order goods over £75 in value. Only in the local area though, which presented some interesting challenges.
